WHO CAN APPLY

 

Director driven at its core, this grant is open to ALL emerging to mid-level BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) visual artists who have a body of produced work in their chosen field (narrative, music video, experimental, and commercial  etc).  Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least 2-3 produced projects in their creative field as a visual artist. This can be as a cinematographer, director, producer, writer,etc

  • Applicants must be 21 years or older.

  • Applicants must be a permanent resident of Canada and reside in and around the Greater Toronto Area.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 


Applicants must submit the following via
THIS APPLICATION FORM

  • One page - Letter of interest, that includes a brief description of your previous work (please include links if possible)

  • One page - Bio

  • One page - Resume

  • A copy of the script, if applicable

  • One sheet / treatment** outlining your project (please include visual reference where applicable, as well as, any key collaborators you may be working with on the project ie. DP, editor, and producer etc).

**Please note: If you need support putting together a visual treatment for your project submission, please reach out to the HH collective and we can provide insight, templates, and support.  


ABOUT THE GRANT

Each grant will be supplemented with in-kind donations for services and equipment (i.e. camera, grip, lighting), wardrobe/styling, and post production. Recipients will also receive support from commercial production companies and from members of the Hire Higher collective.


PRODUCTION SUPPORT

Common Good will be the lead production company providing the primary support for each recipient throughout the duration of the program, and are committed to supporting the Creative's endeavours for their respective projects.  Common Good will engage in supportive and healthy dialogue, mentorship, and collaboration to ensure the successful completion of each project.

SUPPORT MAY INCLUDE:

  • Producing a project from start to finish.

  • Production & post scheduling and planning

  • Logistic support

  • Creative and executional consultation

  • Organizational support (office space to work, production insurance etc).

  • Facilitating relationships for pre production, shoot, and post production


EQUIPMENT

 

Hire Higher has partnered with Panavision and William F. White, to provide in- kind donations for equipment on each selected project.

Panavision Will Provide: 

  • An Alexa Mini OR RED Helium camera package along with basic accessories 

  • One set of Primo lenses 

  • Consultation on the camera package to ensure it fits the needs of each project

WFW Will Provide:

  • $5,000 in kind donation for grip and lighting equipment.

  • Consultation on the package to ensure it fits the needs of each project


Please note, this package DOES NOT include specialty equipment (i.e. dolly, generator, etc).  


STYLING / WARDROBE

 

Georgia Groom from Inclusive Stylist Toronto will be available for at least 3 consultations with each project’s stylist throughout the shoot, and offer practical support for them to complete your project.

If a particular grant doesn’t have a stylist they work with, IST can help facilitate introductions to stylists from the IST community, and offer those stylists support with your project.

Lastly, IST will facilitate an in-kind donation for wardrobe rental from Berman & Co for each recipient’s project, amount TBD based on each individual’s needs.


POST SERVICES

 

RED LAB will provide post finishing services for each project in the form of the online and conform of the final edit, along with a finishing color session.


HIRE HIGHER SUPPORT

 

Members of the Hire Higher Collective will be available and accessible to each grant recipient for support and mentorship throughout the duration of each project.  Whether it’s technical or creative advice, providing connections to talent and crew, or insights about working in the production industry, HH will share their resources and access to the production industry to facilitate connection, growth, and development of each recipient, and aims to create tangible change in the production industry as a whole. 


THE SELECTION
COMMITEE

Headed by some of the top filmmakers in Toronto, the selection committee represents a cross section of professionals from various facets of production (directors, dp’s, producers, stylists etc), who have experience at all levels: from commercials and music videos to narrative feature films and television.
